EIGHT FOR 291

AUSTRALIANS MEET SUSSEX

GOOD BOWLING KEEPS SCORE DOWN CENTURY TO BARDSLEY By Telegraph.—Press Aeea.—Copyright. Reuter’s Telegram. (Received August 29, 5.5 p.m.) BRIGHTON, August 28. Ten thousand people were present on the opening day of the Australians’ match against Sussex. The weather was glorious, and the wicket good. Bardsley won the toss. The teams are:— Australia. Bardsley, Woodfull, Ponsford, Macartney, Ryder, Andrews, Oldfield, Grimmett, Taylor, Everett, ilailey. The Sussex team to meet the Australians on Saturday will be chosen from the following:—A. E. R. Gilligan (captain), A. H. H. Gilligan, A. J. Holmes, R. L. Holdsworth, P. V. Williams, K. S. Duleepsinghi, I*’. B. B. Browne, E. H. Bowley, M. W. Tate. T. Cook, G. Cox. Gilligan and Tate opened the attack on a fast wicket. Ponsford, after one life, snicked the ball into the hands of Gilligan at first slip.

MACARTNEY GOES EARLY Macartney was disappointing, playing only five balls before he was dismissed. At lunch Woodfull was batting solidly, and, partnered by Ryder he took the score to three for 69. Then Ryder was dismissed. Bardsley, who replaced him, drove lustily, and scored in all directions. Woodfull continued to bat solidly until lie went out leg before to Tate. Andrews followed, and caused an interruption for ten minutes, dancing with pain from a blow on his leg from Gilligan. He then suddenly attacked the bowling, and scored 13 off one over. At the tea adjournment the score was four for 202. SLACK FIELDING On resuming, Bardsley batted brilliantly, scoring frequently with characteristic off-drives. Many runs were notched from overthrows, the result of poor backing up. Bardsley was continually beaten by the pace of Tate. Andrews played a solid innings, batting soundly against good bowling, which negatived the slackness of tho fielding. AUSTRALIA. First Innings.
