KENT MATCH DRAWN

FINE INNINGS BY WOOLLEY GREGORY TAKES FOUR WICKETS'. CANTERBURY, August 27. The weather was hot for the third and final day* of the match between the Australians and Kent. Tho wicket wore right through to the finish. As a draw was inevitable, stumps were drawn at 5.10 p.m. to enable the Australians to entrain for Brighton. Kent, in tho second innings, made a poor start, five wickets failing quickly for 32 runs; then Woolley and Knott stepped the procession. Gregory was bumping hard, and howled at a rare pace, especially downhill. VVoolley had his finger injured from a rising hall lrom Gregory when he had scored 40, hut ho and ivnott proceeded to dig themselves in, Woolley contriving to get tho lion’s share of the howling. He gathered in all the runs obtainable against bowling of excellent variety. MACARTNEY CATCHES WOOLLEY Knott, .straic.ill-ui'i 11 ng a ball from Grimmett for 4, saved an innings defeat. which had appeared likely. Woolley was playing his best, driving to the off and cutting excellently, and scoring mainly fours, as well as two sixes, which lie got off Mailey on successive halls. He was dismissed by a superb catch by Macartney in the long field, high overhead, the ball travelling very fast. He was at tho crease for two hours and a half, and his partnership with Knott lasted an hour and three-quarters, and produced 127 runs. Ten minutes later, for the addition of six runs, Knott was clean howled by Gregory, after a sound display, during which he hit seven fours. G. Bryan, who gave a couplo of early chances, then proceeded to gather in lucky fours off Gregory, with Freeman, put on 36 runs in 27 minutes, a most useful combination. INNINGS DECLARED Chapman sportingly declared the innings closed at 3.45, leaving Australia 93 minutes to got 155 runs to win, but the tea adjournment was prolonged for thirteen minutes, leaving Australia 80 minutes only. Hendry and Ellis started brightly, and had. 25 runs un in ten minutes, when Hendry was beaten by Free-

man’s break-back. Ellis, with welltimed shots to the leg boundary, added 22, while Richardson only scored a single. Ellis was beaten by a ball which completely mystified him, tho total then reading 58 runs for two wickets. The remaining batsmen scored so slowly that a draw was inevitable.
