FROM AUSTRALIA
THE NEW TOWN CLERK
THE MAYOR EXPLAINS. Returning to Wellington from th% Ccmmonwealth yesterday, the Mayor (Mr C ; J. B. Norwood) admitted that while in Australia he had interviewed several persons whose applications for the vacant post of town clerk lie in the hands of the council. If it seeined that the City Council had not dealt candidly with the public it was not so, said Mr Norwood. It must be remembered that the applications were confidential, and that to didcUss the applicants would not be fair to them, and might even damage tho positions which they now held.
The finance committee had decided to make the town clerk its chief executive officer, trith power to co-ordinate the working of nil departments, nnd that men who were Capable of carrying on such important work were not plentiful. There appeared to be a number of very good applicants, but this called for the most careful investigation.
