AUSTRALIAN COAL STRIKE
SIXTEEN VESSELS TIED UP ONE A PASSENGER SHIP. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received May 24, 8.15 p.m.) MELBOURNE, May 24. As the result of the coal strike 15 inter-State colliers and cargo ships and one passenger steamer are tied up, and there are 640 seamen idle. GOVERNMENT MAY INTERVENE (Received May 21, 8.15 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 24. It is unofficially stated at the Trades Hall that the Government has decided to interveae in the coal strike, and will endeavour to arrange a settlement. MINERS BOYCOTT VOLUNTEERS (Received May 24, 11.5 p.m.) After the conference between tho coal miners and the striking enginedrivers and firemen the Miners’ Union announced that the miners would not work with the volunteers carrying out the strikers’ duties.
