TIMBER CUTTING RIGHTS
TROUBLE WITH NATIVES COMPANY’S OPERATIONS STOPPED ♦ . \ INCREASED ROYALTIES N CLAIMED Per Press Association. TE KUITI, April 29. A dispute which has been simmering for some time between Messrs Ellis and Burnand, Ltd., and the native owners of a block leased for timber cutting came to a climax when the Maoris stopped a locomotive on the border of the block, ten miles from Mangapehi. A Maori representative served a notioe on the manager, charging the company with breach of agreement, and stating that the company and tlio employees would be treated as trespassers if they were found on the block, as the agreement was cancelled. The locomotive returned to Mangapehi, and fpod and mails were sent on a horse-drawn truck. The native owners contend that the increased royalties agreed upon last year became payable over twelve months ago, while the com-
pany holds that they are not payable till the new agreement is approved by the Native Land Court, which is to consider it at its next meeting.
