The star event will be the meeting of Rapine, Reremoana, Glentruin, and Granu Knight, over a mile, to-morrow. To-day the chief handicap event will be the Hawke’s Bay Cup. The Trenthom winner, Star Stranger, heads the list (of weights, and as he is showing signb of improvement he can bo looked to ti> run prominently. However, he is giving a lot of weight to Novar and Piuthair, both of whom stay well. Piuthair looks to have a great chance. My Hobby and Othon will be in request for the Longlands Welter. Magna Charta has the best form of those engaged in the Nursery, and Rascal and Inner Harbour might prove his toughest opponents. Automne, Royal Damon, and Father O’Flynn will have supporters for the Porangahau Handicap. The turns at Hastings will be all in favour of Standard. ; Luke Wilson, who was domiciled .at Hastings for some years, when he acted as private trainer to the Douglas Estate, has returned from Victoria, and was watching, the gallops on the Hastings track this week He looks well. Now, he says, he weighs less than 7st 61b ana never felt better in 'his life, and there is talk of his taking up riding again. The Thorn is to accompany them, but 'he will be brought back and put into work again after a few weeks, in view of spring meetings. . £ Rayner will bring back with him trom Koatanui a couple of youngsters and Vaudeville, who is to be given another chance to make good on the racing track. Johnston is hopeful that the Kilbov mare will regain most of her old-time form. ~ The Broadwood gelding, Broad Check, who had won six steeplechases on Melbourne courses, ended his career this month at Caulfield. He was burdened ■with 13.7 in the Neerim Steeplechase, and he fell at n log fence, breaking bis At the recent, yearling sales in Sydney 658 youngsters changed hands at 143, <35 guineas, or an average of approximately 218* guineas. During three days H. Chisholm and Co. disposed of 306 lots at 69,365 guineas, an approximate average of 226 guineas, while during the same period William Inglis and Son sold 352 yearlings at 74.370, an average approximately of 211 guineas. All told eleven Valaises were disposed of for 25,400, or an average of 2309 guineas.
