LOWER HUTT STREETS

SOME CRITICISM • A discussion on street surfacing methods took place at tho meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council. Tho works committee reported that further consideration had been given to tlio method of treating the various streets which were tho subject of the contract now in course of being carried out, and the committee recommended that tho specifications be adhered to with the exception that Woburn road, Victoria and Cuba streets be treated by the “penetration method,” at an additional cost cf £l6 4s per chain, or £losß for the 90 chains. Councillor Hobbs said that in his opinion the whole of the ’bus route from Waterloo road to Bellevue road ought to be dealt with by the penetration method instead of merely by tar painting. He was also much concerned with, the method being adopted t-o prepare the streets for tar painting. The method was that adopted t by the City Council years ago in laying down a piece of road from the city to Kaiwarra, which had been a failure, and was taken up. Far too much n>etal was being put on the road. Councillor Teagle said the ’bus routes of to-day might not be the 7 biis routes of a year hence, and therefore the works committee had not thought it right to go to the extra expenditure of having these roads dealt with under the tar penetration method. With regard to the method Councillor Teagle said he had faith in the engineer. Councillor Hobbs said he did not wish it understood that he was of the opinion the engineer did not know his job, but he had seen failures in the use of this method in the past, and it would be wrong of him when he held that opinion not to protest. He requested that his note •be recorded against the adoption of the report as a protest against what was being done. The repprt was adopted.
