MAKING GOLF HARDER
LARGER AND LIGHTER BALL LIKELY -TO BE ADOPTED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received September 21, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, September 20. The controversy over the proposed larger and tighter golf ball has taken a new turn. The” committee of the Royal and Ancient Club of St. Andrew’s proposes for the amateur open championships of 1926 that balls must be at least 1.68 inches in diameter, and weigh a maximum of 1.550 z. The average golfer revels in a long drive, and has resolutely spurned any experiments to introduce a ball giving less driving power and demanding more skilful control. If the resolution is accepted, and the experiment with a few hundred championship players proves successful, the general ' body of golfers, numbering over 600,000, will fall into line. The ball’s weight, under the scheme, would be reduced to 1$ pennyweights and the diameter increased .06in. America is introducing this ball in 1926, and it is estimated that the drive in a stiff wind will be reduced by from 10 to 20 yards.
