THE ROAD TO LANGFIELD
“Hallo, Cauliflower 1” cried a facetious youth to a farmer who was driving along a country lane. “Give a fellow a lift to Langfield?” Without waiting for a reply he leapt on the cart and sett'ed himself comfortably on an old sack After two or three miles had been covered the young man paused for a moment in his chatter. “It’s further to Langfield than I supposed,” lie remarked. “It’s a good distance!” answered the farmei. Another twenty minutes passed, auci then, the young man iroidrcd- “About how far is it to Langfield ?”. “Well,” replied the farmer, .“beepin' Straight on the way we’re goin’ ir-iv, I should say it’s about >■ D’uurhw’ n,j'e« or so: but if you we ■ +•> act out and walk back the way w- . come it ain’t much more than eight miles.”
