RAID ON HERMES
OPIUM DISCOVERED FIFTY POUNDS FINE IMPOSED. As a Tesult oi a raid by two Customs officials, searchers A. H. Boland and B. Bacon, upon the sleeping quarters ot the Chinese crew of the steamer Hermes', berthed at Thorndon breastwork. on Tuesday evening, at the sitting of the Magistrate’s Court, held yesterday morning, before Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., Yong Ah Wong, a young Chinaman and boatswain of the steamer Hermes, was eharged with importing into the Dominion opium in a form suitable for smoking. In a statement, by means of a Chinese interpreter, Wong pleaded guilty to the charge preferred against him, but submitted that the opium was kept for the purpose of relieving sickness among the Chinese crew. The Collector of Customs (Mr E. T. W. MacLaurin) deposed that the amount of opium discovered in Wong’s quarters -was in the vieiniiy of 41b in weight. Accused had concealed in his cabin some 18 small tins' of the drug in Question. Wong was fined £SO, in default three yxonthe’ imprisonment.
