DIVIDING TO-NIGHT
AMERICAN FLEET AT SEA SPEED MAY BE REDUCED. By Telegraph.—Press Aasn.—Copyright. (Received July 20, 5.5 p.m.) _ SYDNEY, July 20. .The American fieet, according to a wireless message received here, will divide on Tuesday night, off Gabo Head; one division will head for Sydney, the other for Melbourne. Under a summer-like <?ky and warm sun, the fleet is moving speedily along its course. In fact, in order to arrive at Melbourne and Sydney at the designated time, it will probably be necessary to reduce speed to 9 knots. In order that both detachments may arrive at approximately the same time the whole fleet is going on to a point virtually equi-distant from MelSourne and Sydney. OFFICERS’ WIVES MUST STAY IN NEW ZEALAND (By radio from the special representative of the Australian Press Association, aboard the battleship Seattle.) Officers whose wives are travelling to Australia by the Niagara received advices by wireless from Suva, indicating that the women would not he able to continue their journey from New Zealand to Sydney, owing to the waterside strike, and that it would be necessary for them to take another steamer from New Zealand, which would land them on July 28th instead of the 25th. The news was received with great regret, as it means that their short stay in Australia will be further reduced. The position of the fleet at noon on Sunday was 591 miles from Port Phillip, and 608 from Sydney. The weather was fine and the sea calm.
■ The fleet sighted the Physa, the first steamer that has crossed the warships’ path since leaving Honolulu.
