REVOLT IN LISBON

MILITARISTS GAIN LIBERTY NO HOPE OF SUCCESS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LISBON, July 19. A military revolt, headed by a number of officers who were arrested after the outbreak of April 18th, and who escaped from the fortress at San Juliao, broke out early this morning. The cruiser Vasco da Gama declared for the revolutionaries. Tho Government took prompt measures to suppress the revolt, the leader of which, Captaiii Baptista, and four other officers have already surrendered, and are in gaol. . The submission of the Vasco da Gama is expected at any moment. Other revolutionaries are encamped near Belem, but the movement is considered to have been already suppressed. A large force of troops is guarding the President’s palace. COMPLETE SURRENDER Renter’s Telegram. (Received July 20. 8.40 p.m.) LISBON. July 20. All the revolutionaries surrendered in tho morning, after much shooting. Martial law is established throughout the country. The Government threatened to bombard the Vasco da Gama if she held out, and the cruiser then surrendered unconditionally in tho afternoon. The situation otherwise is normal.
