MONEY FOR THE NAVY
CABINET FACES BIG PROBLEM ECONOMIES MOOTED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received July 20, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, July 20. •The Parliamentary correspondent of the “Sunday Express” affirms that the Cabinet is likely to favour a slight modification of t)ie Admiralty programme, and also hopes to counterbalance some of the new expenditure by economies. It will review the position of all the dockyards,' the rates of pay in the Navy and the Air Force. The “Daily Express” says Ministers are seeking a compromise on the cruiser question, and probably an accommodation will be reached without resignations from the Cabinet. The committee of Cabinet suggests a saving, which eventually will amount to £4,000,000 a year, by reducing the pay of future recruits in the army to the extent of 20 per cent., in the Navy 15 per cent., and in the Air Force 10 per cent.
