SETTLEMENT EXPECTED
CONFERENCE OF SHIPOWNERS AND SEAMEN TO-DAY WHOLE WATERFRONT IDLE MELBOURNE WATERSIDERS BOYCOTT VOLUNTEER SHIPS By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright. (Received July 20, 11.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE, July 20. Both parties to the shipping dispute held conferences and finalised their plans for the joint conference on Tuesday. It is expected that an agreement to end the trouble will be reached. A new factor which has been introduced into the negotiations for the settlement of the shipping trouble is a request, on the part of the representatives of the Seamen’s Union, that a special tribunal be constituted to deal with future disputes and problems of the shipping industry. It is understood that the proposal will be placed before the owners when the parties meet to-morrow, when it is expected to be met by a definite refusal. The owners hold that the proper tribunal already exists, in the Arbitration Court, for the settlement of disputes. When the wharf labourers were called on to load the coastal steamers Marrawah and Kooringa, which are manned by volunteer labour, they refused to do so, and the vessels were loaded by the office staff of the owners, Holyman and Sons, and other labour which the firm was able to engage.
SYDNEY, July 20. Jhe crews of all inter-State steamers which arrived this weekend gave notice, and the whole waterfront is now idle. Both sides have suspended further action, pending the result of Tuesday’s conference in Melbourne.
