N.Z. RUGBY LEAGUE TOURISTS FAST SCORING IN LAST MINUTES DUFTY KICKS FOUR GOALS By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received July 19, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 19. In the, presence of 10,000 people, and in fine weather, the New Zealand Rugby League team scored the initial win of :'ts tour, defeating Newcastle nnd Maitland district at Newcastle by 29 points to 11. The ground was heavy, and the gamo was patchy and sometimes uninteresting. Newcastle’s defeat was mainly duo to lost opportunities and faulty gassing. A feature of the game was 'ufty’s goal-kicking and long line kicks. Although Newcastle almost invariably won the ball from the scrums, they handled it badly, and were unable to follow up their advantage. New Zenland forced the game strongly in the first half, and led at the interval by 11 points to 3. In the second spell Newcastle's tackling was vleadly, but the visitors’ superior weight told. The game was very fast in this spell, and the Newcastle men were holding the visitors , well, the score 15 minutes before the final whistle sounded being 11-8 in favour of New Zealand. At this stage New Zealand ran sway with the game and added 18 extra points in the last ten minutes. Tries were scored by Brown (2), Durty, Saunders, AVeatherall, Herring, and Averv, and Dufty kicked" four goals. For Newcastle Syme and Brown (2) scored tries, and Hodgens Licked one goal.
