Yesterday was devoted to argument .on the question of the competency of expert testimony. The trial is producing heated, scenes between opposing counsel. Mr William J. Bryan, one of the counsel for the prosecution, declared “more than half the scientists throughout the country do not believr, in a personal God or in immortality. The Leopold and Loeb case was a sample of what that doctrine is doing through the universities. It has made murderers. These people had no right to teach children to scoff at the religion of their ancestors.” Reading-from Darwin’s “Descent of Man,” he said the book traced man’g ascent through the -Old World monkeys, “not even from American monkeys. Here we have our glorious pedigree, and every, child is supposed to substitute it for the Bible.” General McKenzie, another of the prosecuting counsel, declared that they wanted to place words in God’s mouth ; that he had made some kind of protoplasm threw it in the ocean, and said: “If you wait for six thousand years I will make something out of you.” The court has adjourned till Monday.
