MAKES FREE WITH MOTOR-CAR. A DETECTIVE. i Before Mr W. G. Riddell, 8.M., at the Magistrate’s Court on Saturday, a man named William Bannerman Rogers appeared in answer to two charges—converting a car, the property of Dominion Motors, Ltd., to his own use, and impersonating a detective. Chief-Detective Kemp said that accused had obtained the car from the Dominion Motors stating that he had been authorised to do so. He drove along the Hntt road, and the next day the car was found deserted. There was damage amounting to £7. In impersonating-a detective the accused had stated that he was A. H. Nnttall, brother of Mr H. Nuttall, the well known, detective, and had been in’ • office in Wellington for 18 months. Chief-Detective Kemp stated that the accused had a past police record. Mr F. B- Anyon, appeared on behalf of Rogers,. and stated that the facts of the case were as outlined by ChiefDetective Kemp. The accused since his last offence nad been doing his beet to live down his past, and it was unfortunate that such a lapse had ocriirred. Counsel contended that the case might he dealt with leniency.
