PRICE OF BREAD
INCREASE NOT JUSTIFIED. LETTER TO CHRISTCHURCH BAKERS. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, February 27. The Department of Industries and Commerce has communicated with the president of the Master Bakers' Association' informing him that the contemplated advance in the price of bread is not justified, and that it intends to investigate the position. The powers possessed hy the Board of Trade, which is now out of existence, have been delegated to the Minister for Industries and Commerce. The bakers had intended to increase as from Monday the prices hy Id on the two pounds loaf and 2d on the four pounds loaf. The department can take legal action if it considers the price is excessive.
An 6arlier message states that the Canterbury master bakers have decided to increase the price of the 21b "loaf to 6jd cash, and 7d delivered.
