POULTRY
LEGISLATION PROPOSED TO REGULATE INDUSTRY. The Poultry Bill was introduced in the House of Representatives yesterday. It provides for the appointment of inspectors, graders and others required for carrying out the previsions of tho Act. By poultry is meant cotmeatio fowls, ducks, geese, turkeys, and tho carcase of ouch birds. Pou;try must be kept under sanitary conditions. Cruelty by reason of overcrowding, failure to provide adequate shelter, food or drink is to he an, cffenoe against the Act. Any outbreak of disease is to be notified and the birds destroyed, or as far as practicable isolated from other birds. No one shall knowingly sell or offer or expose for sale poultry which is diseased. Offences against the Act will make the offenders liable to a fine of £2O. It is provided that the Gover-nor-General rcruy by order in council declare any disease of poultry to. to a disease within the meaning or the Aot. He may also make regulations. i(a) Proscribing the sanitary reSuirements that must be observed _ in lie keeping of poultry, or in holding or storing poultry on any premises, cr in the carriage of poultry. (b) Regulating the marketing of poultry and of eggs for consumption m New Zealand, and providing for the grading and lacking of snch poultry and eggs. -(c) Regulating the export of poultry or of eggs and providing for the grading and’ packing of poultry and of eggs for export from New Zealand. (d) Prescribing reasonable charges for the grading of poultry or eggp, or' for other services rendered by officers under this Act. (e) Prescribing forms of notice and others forms required under this Act. (f) Generally providing for such matters as are contemplated or deemed necessary for giving full effect to this Act.
