A deputation representing temperance bodies and the churches asked the Premier to grant a referendum on the question of liquor prohibition, and also of closing the hotels at noon on Saturdays. Sii Henry Harwell, in reply, said definitely that he did not approve of a prohibition referendum. He pointed out the good effects of which early closing and' strict enforcement of existing legislation had in reducing drunkenness and improving the position generally. He promised consideration of Saturday noon closing.
