ARTHUR’S PASS TUNNEL
ITS OPENING CELEBRATED. Per Press Association. HOKITIKA, December 17. There was a representative gathering at the Town Hall at noon, when luncheon, was tendered by the Westland branch of the Canterbury Progreso League to the Ministerial party and visitors to commemorate the opening of Arthur’s Pass tunnel and the union of Canterbury and Westland. There was a long toast list and the speakers included Sir Francis Bell, Sir Heaton Rhodes, Messrs H. Hollahd and J. O’Brien, M.P.’e, the Hons. McIntyre, Michel and Griramond, M.L.C.’s, and Messrs W. K. McAlpme, Jenkin and Elmslie (British Trade Commissioner). Special references were made to the assistance rendered by Canterbury in connection with the tunnel agitation, the favourably future prospects of Westland and distriat, and the success, general ar-» rangements and prospects of the tunnel.
