MASSACRE OF KOREANS

AFTER JAPAN EARTHQUAKE. CENSORSHIP LIFTED. Australian and N.Z Cable Association. TOKIO. October 22. The bail hitherto imposed on the reports of the massacres of Koreans in the early days of the confusion after the earthquake lias been lifted, owing to greatly exaggerated rumours current. It is reported that the deaths of Koreans at the hands of “vigilantes” and other® exceeded 500 in the affected areas, and the adjoining districts, excepting Tokio, where the number is not yet stated. The police in Yokohama succeeded in affording protection to a large number of Koreans by transferring them tc ships in the harbour. Large numbers of perpetrators of the massacres are under arrest, and are being examined by the police.

OYER 350 KILLED. (Sydney "Sun" Cable.) TOKIO, October 22. Estimates of the mob massacres shoi that 140 Koreans were killed in Yoko hama. 50 in Kanagawa. 160 in Kawa saki, and 16 in the Gumma prefecture, In some instances- police were killed while attempting to prevent violence by tho mob.

October 22. ■ Advices from Tokio state that irhil* it is admitted that a considerable number of innocent Koreans -were massacred, official reports assert that certain Koreans, individually or in parties, were responsible for looting, incendiarism, and other outrages, and their acts afforded the basis for alarms and rumours, which greatly accentuated the terrors of the calamity, and led-to acts of violence by self-constituted defence bands.
