PETONE BOWLING CLUB

SUCCESSFUL OPENING CEREMONY.

There was a good attendance of members and ladies present at the Petone Club’s opening of tlio green on Saturday. The president, Mr H. Appleyard, said it was the twenty-seventh opening they had celebrated, and members generally were to bo congratulated upon the good position in which the club stood. After the president had expressed the hope that all the members would have an enjoyable season, Mrs Appleyard. wife of the president, threw the first jack (a ditcher), amidst applause, and the season 1923-24 was duly declared open. Play was then commenced, a match, president v. vice-president was played, and resulted in a win for tho latter. The wives and lady friends of the members dispensed afternoon ten in tho pavilion, the tables of which were tastefully decorated with the club’s colours, and a profusion of spring flowers. A very pleasant ceremony took plate during the afternoon tea adjournment, when the president presented a gold life membership badge to the club’s first life member, Mr A. Carter, as a mark of high esteem and appreciation for valuable services rendered. Mr Carter is a foundation member, and held an official position from the fowest to tho highest, for twenty-seven years. The recipient thanked the members for th© honour done him. and gave a short and interesting resume of his many years’ official experience.
