PETONE CELEBRATION
SUCCESSFUL SPOETS MEETING. A splendii Labour Day sports meeting was held on the Petone Recreation Ground yesterday, which proved an unqualified success both financially and from an entertainment point of .view. The procession in the morning, which was headed by the Petone Municipal Band, comprised the Municipal Fire Brigade, tradesmen’s vehicles, children s fancy drees, children’s comic dress, handdrawn vohicles, adults’ fancy dress, mounted children, tableaux or gToups, cycles and motor-cars (decorated), and Friendly Societies. Mr W. B. Gough acted as marshal. The most amusing group in the tableaux was the bridal pair, two little tots of five or six years of age, who secured first prize. The Petone Municipal Fire Brigade Won the Licensed Victuallers’ shield outright, securing three successive wins. The prizes in the procession were awarded as follow: —Tradesmen’s turnout, F. S. Jackson; children’s fancy dress, Early Victorian and Chinese; children’s comic costume, scarecrow; tableaux and proups, bridal party; mounted children, Miss Kirkwood; adults’ fancy dress, Japanese; decorated cycle or motor-car, Tararua Tramping Club. SPOETS RESULTS. i The successful competitors in the sports events are:— 100 Yards Handicap (men)—-Winnie, 1; Henwood, 2. 75 Yards Sack Race —Henwood, 1; Kotoa, 2. Boyo’ Sack Race —Church. 75 Yards Single Ladies* Race Miss Wardell, 1; Mias Douglas, 2. Boat Race (50 yards)—W. Wyatt, 1; E. Norman, 2. Ladies’ Nail-driving Competition—Mrs F. Howard, 1; Mrs J. Mar, 2. 75 Yards Cycle Race (slow) —Kerr. Cycle Race (four times round tho oval) —Flatt. 1; Harrison, 2. Many children’s events were also run during the day. In the Baby Show the best girl, under six months, fell to Juno Audrey Noble, while Coral Halse secured second prize. Bdbby Burns secured the first prizo for boys under six months.
