AT NEWTOWN PARK

ENJOYABLE PROGRAMME OF ATHLETIC EVENTS. SOME EXCITING CONTESTS. The Labour Day sports gathering at Newtown Park is always looked forward to with interest by a large section ot the public, and yesterday's meeting was no exception to tbe general rule ot bygone years. Despite counter-attractions, and somewhat unpleasant weather conditions, there was a good attendance to watch the various events. The sky was decidedly overcast at times, and more than cnee, particularly in the morning, it was thought that rain would fall and mar the proceedings. This did not take place, however, though a cold wind made itself felt as the day wore on, and was unpleasant for competitors and the public alike. The programme was a comprehensive one. and almost everv class of competition was included. Particular attention had been paid to the orimary and secondary schools by tbe management committee. and these events were some of the most interesting on the programme. Good entries were received in connection with the dancing competitions, and there were in addition certain novelty events, including a lively baby competition. nail-driving, etc. Eight of the field events were run under tne jurisdiction ot’ the N.Z.A.A.A., whose officials wer* assiduous in their attention to this fer.ture of the day's pleasure.
