NEARING THE END
OROXGORONGO TUNNEL. COMPLETION IN SIGHT. .After many months of weary labour* the meeting of the “drives” at the Orongorrngo tunnel is now in sight. Steady work, in all seasons, has seen no less than of the big range penetrated by the workers, and the time which xvill be occupied on the remaining sixth is measurable in weeks, if not in days. Since the commencement of the work, the gangs have penetrated 5286 feet at the Wainui end. and 3464 011 the Orongorongo side. The Wainui work, of course, was commenced much earlier. There remains just over one-third of a mile to go; to be exact. 1773 feet, out of the task of two miles’ boring which originally confronted the workers. And at tlie average rate of progress (100 feet per week), the tunnellers from either end should meet in side eighteen weeks, or in the earl; days of February next.
