PROTEST AGAINST BY-LAW MOTOR-CYCLISTS’ DEPUTATION TO CITY COUNCIL. “PERFECTLY SAFE PRACTICE,” Mr C. W\ Tanner (president) and ether membejs of the Wellington Moj ter Cycle Club waited upon the City ! Council last night to protest against j the by-law prohibiting riding pillion oti motor-cycles. J There was nothing improper, ho eon;tended, in riding pillion ; no accident hnd occurred in Wellington through the practice, and the same applied to mest of the other cities; while the modern motor-cycles were* built to carry two, a special carrier being piov:ded fox a passenger. Ac a matter cf fact, the passenger helped to steady the bicycle and make it run better. He was prepared to bring 150 to 200 members there to show the strength of opinion in the club on the subject. He understood that the by-law was to comes l.*efore the council at the meeting. and that was why the deputation had come there*. Or H. D. Bennett remarked that the by-1 nvs were only coming up for consolidation. There was nothing new. The by-law in question had boon passed sorno three years ego. The Mayor (Mr R. A. Wright SJ.P.): That is so. Mr Tanner: If so, it is all the more important that the matter should he reconsidered now. Though the by-law was passed, it was held in abeyance; and now is the opportunity to consider whether the matter should not he reopened. The MayoT said that the by-law now came up for consideration by'the council with t~e other by-laws. If the bvlaw was approved that night, it would have to be advertised, and then there would bo an interval of six or eight weeks before it was confirmed by the council, and the club would have an opportunity of being heard on the matter before the by-laws committee. The matter then dropped.
