NEW CHAMPION PRODUCER

FRIESIAN HEIFER PRODUCES 9101 b OF FAT. A Friesian heifer, bred by Mr AY. D. Hunt, of Wellington-, presiaent oi tne New Zealand Friesian- Association, has just succeeded in breaking the New Zealand record for her class for all breeds. This heifer, Bainfield 27, as her name implies, Wa§ bred at Bainfield near Invercargill, and has just completed a record of 23,203.31 b of riiilk and 910.. Mb ot butter-fat. The former record for a senior 4-year-old heifer for Australasia was recently credited to the Taranakiowned Friesian heiter, MaiclnoneßS o Gtowrie; but the Bainfield-bred heifer has beaten her record by no less than 67 991 bof butter-fat. The latest record is a typical performance of the class ot Friesian now being produced in New Zealand, as her average test for the year was 39 In his breeding operations at Bainfield, Mr Hunt has. aimed at making the constitution of his cattle of first importance, and he has also bred to improve the test, and during tne past two wasons a majority of the cattle he has tested have been remarkably high testers This improved, quality with the deep-milking Friesians has much to do w-itn their continually growing popularise Bainfield heifer has no only proven herself a hig)i-tester, but she lias undoubted constitution. She was bred and reared at Bainfield, and waa afterwards sold to a breeder in the eastern district of Southland. After being placed under Government semi-otticial test, tlie heifer waa again sold .and removed further north, and completed her test at the property of Hr R. J- hotter of l'ukerau. Her performance is therefore a most remarkable one, and undoubtedly a tribute to her constitutional power as well as to her quality as a milker. In view of the fact that a paper by Mr Hunt, recently contributed to tho Board of Agriculture on the principles of animal breeding, has oeen widely discussed* it is of interest, to note that Bainfield 27 represents tbe foundation blood of Mr Hunt's herd, ber sire, Bainfield Dutchman, being the first bull bred at Bainfield, being a 6on of the foundation cow of the herd in Oakwood Topsy. Another full-brother" to this bull was also used at Baninfield. and one of his daughters now under teast has given in tbe first two months of the test IStlb of butter-fat. Mr Hunt already owns the champion junior 4-year-old of all breeds, Weetmere Princess Pietertje, 9901 b of fat, and other cows in his herd at present under test include a daughter of this cow, in Westmere Netlierland Princess, which has produced 8781 b ot butter-fat in 365 days,; and others are Oakwood Betty, 7561 bin 340 days, and Moonvale Dairymaid Paxton, a heifer which has produced 7041 b of fat in 353 days.
