POSTAL BUSINESS

A SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE ‘POST EARLY AND OFTEN,” SAYS MINISTER. RELIEVE THE BUSY PERIODS. A considorable increase in postal business has already resulted, from the reduction of the postage rate from lid to Id, brought into operation on October Ist, stated the Postmaster-Gene-ral (the Hon. J. G. Coates) yesterday. “It is yet not possible, of course,” said the Minister, “to give at this early stage a reliable estimate of the effect, of the reduced postage, but it is already evident that business firms and the general firms are regularly using the Post Office more extensively. There appears t-o have been a general increase in postings throughout the Dominion, but at the cliief centres the position is more marked. “The general increase throughout the day at the chief centres is already between 20 and 30 per cent., but the particular pressure m the principal mail rooms is, of course, between the hours cf 5 p.m. and 6.30 p.m., during which period the staff is working at very high pressure. The increase in the postings during the hours mentioned is approximately 50 per cent-. This stresses the necessity for the business community complying with the oft-repeated request of the Post Office that correspondence be posted at frequent intervals during the day.” In short, ‘‘Post Eaidy and Poet Often” is the motto that the Postmas-ter-General wishes business men to adopt.
