MASTERTON CONCLUDES

SOME CLOSE FINISHES FAVOURITES roll home. (“Times” Special Reporter.) Bettors must have bad a fairly good time at Masterton at the concluding day's racing oa Saturday, as favourites and second favourites were in tbe money most of tho day. Ifandicapper Henrys brought the fields together well and there were several close finishes. One of the easiest victories of the meeting; was that of Quest in the Macara Handicap. The Trentham gelding was well in the picture all the way, and when challenged in the straight he ran right away from the opposition and scored in the hollowest fashion without being ridden out. His superiority over the others may be gathered from tho fact that in the last furlong or so he put a break of four lengths on the field. THE TWO-YEAR-OLDS. There did not look to bo many budding Gloamings among the two-year-olds who contested the Cave Plate. They were a half-ready lot, of which the best conditioned were Twink and Lady Isinglass. Lady Isinglass was the most likely-look-ing of the field. She is a nicely-bal-anced, compact filly by Absurd from Cowl, and, therefore, is a full sister to Rational. Miss ODiile, by Joculator from Ermengarde, is a nice filly, bearing a strong resemblance to her dam. The race was won by Lady Isinglass with very little to spare from Wee Marble, who was paying double figures to win. The pair ran neck and neck up the and Ashley Reed, riding with fine judgment, waited till he was a few lengths off the post and then drove : his mDunfc vigorously ahead to snatch a narrow victory. ' Certainly, Lady Isinglass was the better of the pair, but horse- { manship played a big part in the result. | THREE WINS ON END. I There was a rush to be on Trespass and Insurrection in the Opaki Handicap, the chief event of tho day. Wairarapa opinion was that the pair was unbeatable. Outside opinion favoured Kilbird, and the Kilboy gelding, after being in the fighting line all the way, won in a hard finish with Kahikatea, to whom he was conceding a good deal of weight. This was Kilbird’s third successive win. PROCLAIM UNLUCKY. Of the eight starters in the High Weight Handicap most support was forthcoming for Sir Rosebery, and next ‘in demand were Otaura Kid, Proclaim, land Sir .Fanciful. Puketoi went to the | front at the start, followed by Sir Rosej berry,, but Otauru Kid, who had been fractious at the barrier, soon ran into second position. Going along the back , the order was Puketoi, Otauru Kid, Sir Roseberry, Sir Fanciful, BirkenelLa, Proclaim, and Sir Fisher. Proclaim made up ground very fast from the four furlong post, and was first to turn for home. Sir Fanciful joined Proclaim below the distance, and in a great finish won by half a length. Sir Roseberry was a poor third, and Otauru Kid fourth. Proclaim was unlucky to lose. STABLE MATES DISPUTE FINISH. Tho Elgar bracket (Hall Mark and Blonde) were mado leas than ©von-money favourites for the Trial Stakes. They went to the front at the start and stayed there throughout the race. Waimana challenged in the straight, but failed to trouble tb« loaders. Blonde won by a head from Hall Mark. Waimana was three lengths away third, and Royal Divorce was fourth. QUEST’S RUNAWAY VICTORY. Wairarapa was loyal to Martian Miss in the Macara Handicap, and sent her out an even-money favourite. There was also plenty of support for Quest. An excellent start saw the field run in line for a furlong, and then Matareka showed out. She was not long in front, for Quest soon took charge, and led into the straight from Chimera. Chimora lookcQ to have charge below the distance, but Quest settled down to racing, and soon put the issue beyond doubt, winning by lour lengths from Martian Miss, who finished on well and boat Chimera for second place Backsheesh was a poor fourth. LADY ISINGLASS BEATS TWO-YEAK-OLDS. Nine two-year-olds paraded for the Cave Plate, and the public went solidly for Lady Isinglass. Others well backed were Miss O’Dille and the bracketed pair Solfraid and Kilorum. Miss O’Dillo was left at the post and Twinkle was slow to move. Solfraid was first away, and he carried on the running to the turn from Kilniar and Lady Isinglass. At the bottom of tho straight Wee Marble showed up. The pair fought out a . Good finish, but a tew lengths off tbe post Lady Isinglass got tho upper hand and won by a neck. Kilmar was a fair third and Solfraid fourth. KILBIRD WINS BIG RACE. There were no withdrawals from the 1 Opaki Handicap, and the Kemball bracket (Trespass and Insurrection) were | bucked down to a very short price, while there was also good money for Kilbird. Kahikutea was first away, end Kilbird, Scion, and Little River were behind. Tn*jm«s and Insurrection wero Inst. Alonr; the back Kahikatea and Kilbird: had charge, tho latter under a strong pull. Little Rher find moved up third, und Scion and Insurrection were last. Kilbird ran up to Kahikatea at the turn, for home. A good finish up the straight \ 1 saw Kilbird win by half n length. LitHo I 7 River and Trespass were next to finish.

MERRY QUEEN WINS. There were no from the Spring Handicap, for which a field ol even paraded. Merry Queen went to he front soon after the start, and gave nothing else a chance, never being headsi on the journey. She won by a sngth and a half from Black Ronald, fho finished on well in second place. \rizor.*' third and Redsome fourth. HELEN RUFUS AT LAST. Kilbird, who had won the Opaki ? Handicap earlier in the afternoon, and Sir Agnes were withdrawn from the Waif pipi Handicap, and Helen. Rufus was backed with the greatest confidence. Tho : field got away nicely from a walk up [. start, but Helen Rufus received a bump 5 and was sent back. Counter Attack took charge and led into the straight. He l was still in charge well down the run- , nin.g when Helen. Rufus came from the l back with a fine late run, and got up i in time to win from All Gold and j Peneus, both of whom passed Counter t Attack over the last bit. Tatau Tatau - was fourth. HYTINUS BEATS BONECTO. The meeting was concluded with the , Final Handicap, for which the six ac- > ceptors went to the post. Hytinus, Bont ecto. Rose Martian, and Solrino were well backed. Hytinus was in a bandy position all the wav, and in a good finish, ridden right out, 'he won from Bonecto. iolrino was third, Carnbrea fourth. l ’ ; DETAILS OF THE RACING HIGH WEIGHT HANDICAP, j Of 100 sovs; one mile and a distance. • J.
