THE TRAMWAYS DISPUTE

LITTLE PROSPECT OF SETTLEMENT. There appears to be little prospect of the Wellington tramwaymen’e dispute being settled before the Conciliation Council, and it is probable that the whole matter will now toe referred to the’ Arbitration Court for decision. The deadlock has arisen because of tho. City Council’s refusal to agree to anything in the nature of a stabilisation of wages for twelve months. From the council’s point of view it is contended that if such a concession were granted to the tramwaymen, then the Wages of all oflier corporation employees who work under awards of the court would have to be stabilised also.
