STATE COAL
CAUSE OF SHORTAGE. “UNFORTUNATE OOCUEBENCB." A large number of people had complained to him lately of the great delay in the delivery of coal ordered at the Wellington State Goal Depotsaid Mr P. Fraser (Wellington Central), in the House of Itepreoentatrves yea terdav. They had been informed at the depot that there were no stocks of coal on hand. The Hon. G. J. Anderson (Minister for Mines) replied that there had been a series of unfortunate occurrences that had led up to the present sßortage of coal at the depot. Amongst these urns the recent stoppage at the mine. Then a boat that was to have taken a cargo at Greymouth thirteen days ago had been prevented from arriving at Greymouth to tame, and when she did get there she was weatherbound, so that she only arrived at Wellington that morning That day die would have completed HimAnqring coal at the Wellington gasworks and would then supply the State coal depot, and on Monday the customers would be able to get what they wanted. The depots were taking care to see that, the roal sent out was properly screened first, with the result that the customers found the coal of such good quality and there was a bigger demand for it than ever before. The department was enlarging the depot so as to be able to cope with the in. creased demand.
