MANGAHAO POWER

PREPARATIONS IN THE COUNTRY. (Special to “N.Z. Times.”) The Palmerston North Borough Council are about to close the tenders for the reticulation amd the erection of plant. If both are completed within the next four weeks it is confidently expeoted that electric light will be available in the town within twelve months. The Mangahao power will follow some time later, and until that is ready for use the council will use its local plant. When the Mangahao is switched on the council will then run its own plant in conjunction, thus enabling it to obtain power at a rate based upon the lowest consumption rate charged by the Government. Poles for the Mangahao reticulation are being deposited in the Pahiatua and Eketahuna districts, and the work of erecting them has begun. Canvasserb are on the road, also, booking up orders for lights in dwelling houses, and farmers have 'become quite enthusiastic over the chances of power andi light on their farms. BELMONT’S REQUIREMENTS. A share in the Mangahao electric light scheme, a school far the district, a light on the railway station, and better roads are questions at present exercising the minds of the people at Belmont. At a meeting held recently a provisional committee was formed, and, as an outcome, a meeting of residents will be held in the local churchroom on Saturday evening to inaugurate the Belmont Progressive Association. The district is showing signs of advancement, and it is felt locally that the time has come for Belmont to come into line with the other suburbs of the city.
