THE HUTT ROAD

PERMANENT CONSTRUCTION PRICE OF CEMENT NOW FAVOURABLE. LOWER HUTT RECOMMENDATION. The Mayor (Mr R. A. Wright, M.P.), who is chairman of the Hutt Road Board of Control, lias received from the Mayor of Lower Hutt (Mr W. T. Strand) a communication enclosing .the following resolution passed unanimously by the Hutt Borough Council on Friday last: — “That the Mayor of Lower Butt be asked to press for full details of all estimates in connection with the Hutt road maintenance account, and* that he be also asked to support any movement for the construction' of a permanent road; that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to all members of the Board of Control.” In a covering letter, Mr Strand states: “I would be pleased if you would give the above recommendations your careful consideration, as the cost of maintenance seems to be unreasonably high.—approximately £BOO per mile. This amount would moTe than pay the interest and* sinking fund on a loan to put down a first-class roao which would require a minimum of maintenance oost.” The letter wall be considered at the adjourned meeting of the Board of Control this morning. Speaking to a “Times” representative yesterday, Mr Wright (Mayor) said he agreed with the principle embodied in the resolution passed, by the Lower Hutt Borough Council. As far as he knew Mr Strand was correct in his assertion about the cost of maintenance. The Board of Control had previously gone into the question of permanent construction of the road, but nothing had been done, on account of the prohibitive price of cement at tho time. Cement was now much cheaper, and the suggestion of the Lower Hutt Council was. therefore, quite opportune. If the board agreed to the proposal he, personally, would do all he possibly could to sea that the work was carried out.
