CITY BY-ELECTION

CONSIDERED BY CIVIC LEAGUE. SELECTING A CANDIDATE. The . Wellington Civic League has considered the matter of the vacancy on the City Council caused by the death of the late Councillor Underwood. At first the league thought that if the highest on the list of defeated candidates at the last election (Mrs Preston) had been nominated, a by-election costing about £350 would have heen avoided, and the money thus saved have been devoted towards the relief of unemployment. As it has been announced that at least another nomination will be made, a meeting of the league was held on Friday, at which the matter of the vacancy was further considered. The names of several likely candidates were mentioned, and it was decoded to consult these persons as to whether they would stand or not, and whether they would be prepared to submit themselves to a Selection Committee of the league, which was representative of the centre of the oity and many of the surrounding districts. Some of the individuals concerned have intimated their willingness to adopt this course. It was resolved that a special meeting of the league should be held shortly, and that additional representatives of the various municipal electors’ associations should bo invited to attend. This meeting will make the selection of a candidate, and it is believed that by this means one candidate will be set forward as the citizens’ candidate for the by-elpebicm.

The league still expresses mnich regret that it was not found possible to secure the return of one candidate unopposed, seeing that the term of office will bo but for a very short period.
