“MODERN BELIEFS ”

SIR ROBERT STOUT’S ADDRESS. (To the Editor “N.Z. Times.”) Sir, —In the article entitled “Modern Beliefs,” in your issue of Saturday last, Sir Robert Stout, Chief Justice, concludes by asking: “If, however, the infallibility of the Hebrew Scriptures is given up, on what foundation is this dogma of the Virgin Birth to be based?” Why should we give up the infallibility of the Scriptures P The only reason, I gather from hiß article, is that, because some professors (“experts,” he calls them) think that some thing); that the sects have held and taught are not true, therefore, the Bible should be laid aside. Does the Book endorse these teachings? I think not. After some thirty years’ constant reading, I can find in its pages no endorsement of the immortality of the boul, the doctrine of the Trinity, the personality of the Holy Spirit, the deity of Christ, the Son of God uy begettal, the Son of Man by birth —all of which these experts recently seem to have found out, though I have a book, published in 1848, in which, whilst logically and fully dealing with these subjects, it shows that the Scriptures, Old or New, nowhere are responsible for this teaching. Neither do I find anywhere that the Book teaches ttie earth was created 6000 years "ago. This is another fallacy. In'* dealing with inspiration, what about prophecy fulfilled and fulfilling? The Bible is not responsible for the many errors and falsities accepted in its name, and if these were dealt with one at a time, there would be little or no difficulty in showing them to be such. I could write more, but am afraid to trespass further on your space. Thank, ing you in anticipation. W. E. COMBS. Onga Onga, H. 8., June 25th.
