CIVIC LEAGUE

AN ORGANISER APPOINTED. VACANCY ON THE CITY COUNCIL. At a well-attended meeting of the Wellington Civic League, Mr G. Mitchell, M.P., presided. AN ORGANISER. The secretary reported that Mr C. R. Jlobieson had been appointed organiser for the league, and is at pretent. engaged on a canvass of the city. Mr Robieeon was -welcomed by the meeting, and briefly reepqnded. SHORTER ROUTES TO CITY. Representatives of the Karori and Northland Progressive Associations were present by invitation, and placed before the meeting several matters relating to tlieir respective districts. The questions of shorter routes to the city by tram or ’ bus, and the providing of water and drainage for Karori were discussed at some length, the league deciding to 00-operate with these districts in making certain representations to the City Council. CITY COUNCIL VACANCY. The matter of the vacancy arising an the City Council by the regrettable death of Councillor S'. Underwood was considered Uy the meeting, and the view generally held was that an election should be avoided if possible. After the visitors had retired the question was further discussed, and the following motion was passed:— “That in view of the short period till the general election of oouncaHore. and the expense which the city would be put to by an election at this time, the league is of opinion that to avoid this unnecessary expense, the next on. the list of candidates at the previous election (Mrs Preston), being a very suitable candidate, should be elected unopposed.” It was stated that the oast of an election, if contested, would probably be from £350 to £4OO, ana the general view of the matter was that, with the existing need for economy, an effort should be made to nvoid this expenditure. Appreciative reference was also made to Sirs Preston’s social work in the city. TRAM FARES TO SUBURBS. The question of tramway fares to the suburbs was brought forward, and it was decided to hold a special meeting to consider tramway matters in a fuller way.
