BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS VARIOUS SUBJECTS AT LAST NIGHT’S MEETING. HUTT AND OTHER ROADS. Tlio fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held in the council chamber last evening. His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. T. Strand) presided, .and present were: Councillors J. Brasell, A. Macaskill, W. G. Meldrum, J. Mitchell, TV. Dempsey, A. J. Hobbs, A. Mcßain. and A. J. West. APPOINTMENT OP INSPECTORS. Letters from the Department of Agriculture, suggesting that the council should appoint its own noxious weed inspector, and from the Department of Heal ill, recommending the appointment of a Sanitary inspector who had passed the Sanitary Institute’s examination, were held over until a report was received. NOMINAL GAS PRICES. A letter from the Petone Borough Council was received stating that it had agreed to the nominal cost of 5s ■for gas, on the understanding that the costing when made should be on a basis covering the last costing when Mr Kennedy acted practically in the position of umpire. This price will rule until the price is fixed by the gas control board. This was agreed to. ANTECEDENT LIABILITIES. A letter was received from the Thames Borough Council asking local bodies to approach the Government to raise a loan to cover all antecedent liabilities of the local bodies. This was held over pending a report to the council by His Worship on the position. GRACEFIELD ROADS. “Absolutely disgusting,” was the description of a deputation of Gracefield residents of the roads in their part of the borough. They had, they said, to wade through a eea, of mud in order to reach the main road, and asked that some improvement should be made. After the deputation had retired, it was decided to place the matter in the hands of the works committee with power to act. Applications were received from Thomas Jamieson for a motor driver’s license, and from A. S. Henderson for permission to use the gymnasium in the council building as a billiard room instead of the room at present used. —Both were granted. HUTT ROAD BOARD I . The Town Clerk, Wellington, notified that a meeting of the Hutt Road Maintenance Board would be held shortly. The estimated expenditure for the year was £4OOO, and the pnoportioii which the Lower Hntt would have to bear was fourteen per oent., or £560. It was decided to appoint a representative to the meeting HONOURS BOARD. A cheque for the sum of £l7 19s 4d was forwarded by Mr H. Baldwin to cover the cost of additions to the honours board. His Worship expressed his appreciation of the interest which Mr Baldwin, an ex-Mayor, continued to take in the affairs of the borough. He moved that a letter of appreciation should be sent to Mr Baldwin. Councillor West, in seconding, added a tribute to Mr Baldwin’s great generosity to the borough at all times.— The motion was canned unanimously. M'tNOR MATTERS. The Lower Hutt Brass Band wrote agreeing to accept the council’s offer to them of £25 for five concerts. Mr W. J. Wood wrotte on behalf of A. Boyle, G. Laing-Meason, and Pyne’a Trustees, asking that Wilford street should be properly formed as it was at present almost" impassable.—lt was decided ,to reply that the work was impossible at present. The Hutt Labour Representation Committee wrote applying for permission to table in the library a copy of the “Maoriland Worker” weekly.—-The letter was received, but no action was taken. The Society for the Protection of Women and Children was granted permission to use the council room for meetings on the first Tuesday after, noon in each month.
