INCREASING IN THE CITY CONFERENCE TO BE HELD AT EARLY DATE. "CAN YOU EMPLOY THESE MJEN ?” On tho unemployment question the following report has been presented to th Central Progress League by the secretary (Mr G. R. Mitchell). — REPORT TO CENTRAL PROGRESS LEAGUE. During tho last week or two the xmemployed have steadily increased in the city, m spite of the fact that the Government have placed numbers of men on various relief works. 350 men are now employed in the Wellington district. It will bo 6eeu. therefore, that the Government have made considerable efforts to relieve the' pressure, and I found the E’ublic Works Department officials sympathetic and anxious to do all in their power to place men. Besides the number mentioned above, some 20 odd partially disabled soldiers have been sent to forestry work. Most of the unemployed are on road

The number registered at the end of May are, approximately:—Repatriation, 120; Labour Bureau, 389; City Council, 4-67; total, 976. After taking out the duplications there are a little over 600 separate registrations of men out of work The number registered with the City Council is on account of the anticipated! loan money being spent in the •itv. when it is thought by many that there will be work available. Naturally,married men with families in the city prefer work in the city to filing out to the country, which would necessitate keeping two homes going. Your secretary discussed the matte* with His Worship the Mayor, also with the Returned Soldiers* Association. The Mavor proposes to call a meeting at an early date, when all bodies in the city are expected: to be represented for the purpose of • taking united action to relieve the situation. The following is a list of those out of work at the Labour Bureau, and I am. pleased they would be glad to receive word of anyone having employment for these men. The men con undertake heavy, work, while the number of those suitable for lighter work is given in parentheses: Cooks, stewards, etc., 22; coopers, 2labourers, 189 (26); clerical (6); drivers, 15; tailor’s presser, 1; boilermakers, 2; butchers, 4 (1); farm hands, 15; gardeners, 3 (2); baker, 1; blacksmiths, 4; boot operatives, 2; carpenters, 14; seamen, 11; school teacher (1); saddler, 1; plumbing,- 6; electricians, 5; engineers, 19 (2); engine-drivers, 5; hairdresser, 1; motor mechanics, 9 (1); moulders, 2; painters, 2: printing trade, 1; slaughterman, 1; snip's officer, 1; storemen, 3; 6hop.asistants, 3 (6). Total, 344 (45).
