IRON WORK ON VESSEL
, FOR PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT. \ There- were 153 packages, comprising ironwork for the boilers at the CHtfra power-house, in the holds of the s.s. Wiltshire, which struck on the Barrier Reef on Wednesday night. They were consigned to the Public Works Department. It is not yet known whether any other machinery for power stations was aboard the vessel. VESSEL’S POSITION HOPELESS MESSAGES FROM AUCKLAND. STEAMER BROKEN IN TWO. The Federal Office yesterday received the following messages from Auckland concerning: the Wiltshire: — Received 10.50 a.m.—“Just reported vessel full of water. Position is hopeless. Seas making clear breach over her. Arahura unable to get near. Katoa should have no difficulty in sending a-elief overland to wreck.” Later.—“ The Katoa advises Wiltshire broken in two. Relief party on scene endeavouring to rescue crew.” Later (received; from the Union Steam Ship Company -at Auckland).-—^‘Ara-hura advisee, owing to heavy gale, she is unable to attempt rescue by sea. Therefore, have instmcted her to proceed to Tryphena to land' rockets and apparatus for conveyance to wreck. Since then, however, understand, proper mortar required, therefore sending appliances by Moeraki. flailing at 1 p'.ro* to-day, to be transhipoed to tug off Tryphena. Moeraki will then proceed on her voyage to Sydney.’ 5
