TRAFFIC RETURNS
NEW ZEALAND RAILWAYS. FIRST QUARTER 1921-22. FEWER PASSENGERS, BIGGER REVENUE. The comparative statement, gazetted yesterday, of the traffic on all sections of the New Zealand Railways for the periods .April Ist to June 30th, 1921 and 1920 respectively, shows a decrease of 330,957 in the number of passengers carried, a decrease of 190,264 in the number of cattle, calves, sheep and pigs carried; an increase of 161,604 in the number of tons of timber, minerals. and otner goods conveyed ; and an increase from £1,502,133 to £1,658,683 in the total revenue. For the past quarter the expenditure totalled £l,604,657, or 96 74 per cent, of the revenue, as against £1,099,722, or 73.21 per cent, of revenue, for the June quarter of 1920. The details of the revenue and expenditure for the past quarter are as follow, the expenditure being given within parentheses:— North Island —Whangarei £17,388 (£18,530), Kaihu £2417 (£2686), Gisborne £12,506 (£9535) North Island Main Trunk lines and branches £948,723 (£865,031) ; total, £980,986 (£895,784). : South Island —South Island main lines and branches £576,990 (£621,421), Westland £52.270 (£42.281), Westport £28,161 (£21.654). Nelson £7341 (£9716,), Picton £11,194 (£10,792), Lake Wakatipu steamers £1739 (£3006); total, £677,697 (£708,873). Grand total, £1,658,683 (£1,604,657). CORRESPONDING PERIOD LAST YEAR. North Island—Whangarei £14,309 (£13,226), Kaihu £1690 (£2154), Gisborne £9795 (£7806), North Island main lines and branches £832,170 (£571,941); total, £857,965 (£595,129). South Island—-South Island main lines and branches £557,752 (£432,685), Westland £40,580 (£33,128), Westport £24,242 (£17,583), Nelson £9178 (£10,211), Picton £10,371 (£8706), Lake Wakatipu steamers £2044 (£2277); total, £644,168 (£504,593). Grand total, £1,502,133 (£1,099,722).
