THE SOLDIER SETTLERS. GRIEVANCES DETAILED. (Special to “N.Z. Times.”) -Hon. D. H. Guthrie, Minister for Lands,' paid a visit to Dannevirke last Saturday. The War- Relief Association interviewed the Minister, and pointed out that a number of soldier settlers had found themselves on land bought at big values and were consequently finding it difficult to meet their liabilities. They wanted to know how for the Government was prepared to assist these men. The Minister said it was the policy of the Government to decide each individual case on its merits', when they would either postpone the collection of rent, or if necessary capitalise the land. An essential to the Government granting assistance was that a man must be “a trier.” , ■ Extra expenses in connection with the Tiratu Soldiers’ Cheese Factory, was put before the Minister. The directors asked the Minister to expedite the granting of the repatriation loan at present before the Wellington Repatriation Board. The Minister promised to inquire into the matter. The Minister paid a visit to the Glengarry soldier settlement, and expressed himself as being very pleased with what he saw.
Monday (to-day) ho left for Takapaii, accompanied by Sir Geo. Hunter to inspect the soldiers’ farms there.
