Isaac Jolly, M.A., for a long time minister of St Stephen’s Presbyterian Church, Ponsonby, left for London by the Makura. New Zealand manager of the United Insurance Company, Limited, is at present in Dunedin on business connected with his office. Mr James Boddle, of Te Kuiti, has been appointed the Department « of Lands’ representative of the revaluation committee for the Auckland district. The Masterton County Council has appointed Mr W. J. Welch, ite former chairman, to act as assessor in connection with the revaluation of the county. Mr A. G. Wise, general manager of the -Melbourne “Herald,” who has been on a visit to Wellington, will leave here to-morrow for Sydney by the Moeraki. • A Press Association wire from Dunedin states that Air Thomas Soollay has been elected chairman of the Dunedin Harbour Board, unopposed, and Mr H. C. Campbell deputy chairman. Mr G. E. Stokes, district clerk, Health Department, Dunedin, has been transferred to Wanganui, and Air M. C. McLeod, of Wanganui, has come to take over the duties at Dunedin. Lieutenant-Colonel W. L. Burgess and Lieutenant-Colonel A. E. drawford, and the Hon. T. E. Fell were passengers by the” Makura, which left Auckland for Vancouver on Tuesday. Air T. A. Skinner, manager for New South Wales of the South British Insurance- Cb., is spending two months’ vacation in New Zealand. Air and Mrs Skinner are at present in Auckland. . Mr T. V. Fox,, of the Eketahuna branch of the Bank of New South Wales, has been transferred to Wellington. He will be succeeded by Mr Kelly, of Hawera. Mr T. Harle Giles, Conciliation Commissioner at Auckland, has left for Gisborne. Conciliation business at Gisborne will probably detain the Commissioner there for a fortnight.

Air F. Martyn Renner was re-elected to position of secretary and treasurer of the Secondary Schools Assistants’ Association at the annual conference yesterday. Eulogistic reference was made by several speakers on his re-election to the position.

Mr L. E. Haines, who has been manager of the Oamaru branch of the Bank, of New Zealand for the past 10 years, retires on superannuation at the end of June. Mr Haines was an active member of the North Otago Golf Club and Phoenix Bowling Club. Professor William S. Vernon, late Acting-Professor of. Physics, University College, Auckland, has accepted a position with the Royal Air Force, in the instrument design establishment at Biggin Hill, Kent. He is to carry on research work in wireless telegraphy and telephony as applied to aircraft. Mr Charles Francis, of .New Yorx, and his daughter, Mrs Fitch, are to be given a civic reception by the Mayor (Mr R. A.Wright, AI.P.) in the Mayor’s room at the Town Hall at midday to-day. Mr Francis is a prominent American printer: and, as a' brother printer, Air Wright wishes to do him honour. It was resolved by the Masterton County Council to place on record the faithful service rendered the community by Senior-Sergeant Miller, who recently resigned from the polio force. A Press Association message from Christchurch records the 'death of the Rev. E. C. Chambers, who has been vicar of St. Saviour’s, Lyttelton, since 1885. The deceased, who was 70 years of age, served in the Royal Navy, retiring m 1870 with the rank of lieutenant. He _ was prominently associated with public functions, for some years was sole chaplain to Permanent Artillery in the-South Island, and actingchaplain to the Royal Navy. / On the motion of Air J. G. Hark ness (chairman), the Wellington Harbour Board carried unanimously yesterday the following resolution: —“That this board places on record its appreciation of the valuable services rendered to the port of Wellington by Messrs W. Cable, C. H. Chapman, A. McLeod, R. E. Sinclair and R. A. Wright, M.P., during their respective periods of membership on the board, and directs that the secretary convoy the board’s appreciation to each of the gentlemen named.” Mr Cable, stated the chairman, had been a member of the board for practically 14 years, and was for two years chairman of the board. Mr Chapman, the Labour representative, had been a member of the board for two years, Mr AlcLeod for two, Air Sinclair for six, and Mr Wright for eight years. The Wellington Central Chamber of Commerce,'at its last meeting, tendered its hearty congratulations to Mr W. J. Jones, M.L.0., was spoken of in glowing terms in the annual report of the Secondary Schools Assistants’ Association of New Zealand, which was adopted at the annual conference opened yesterday. “He was a man of highest ideals, a staunch supporter of liberty, and extraordinarily well versed in the political history and changes of this Dominion. He proved himself one of our ablest champions and fonght fur us to the last,” stated the report. “In the retirement of Air J. P„ Firth from the Wellington .
