AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS
COMMENTS ON THE SURREY MATCH. THE HOURS CONTROVERSY. -Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, May 8. ■ Mr Phelam Warner, writing in the “Morning Post,’’ says the spectators at the Surrey match were singularly apathetic. They applauded Macartney and Collins at the conclusion of their innings, but there was little applause during the play. But the day was cheerless. Macartney was confidence personified. His square late cut’s wero superb. Collins- is not 6tylish, but is a remarkahlv good batsman—an ideal first man. He predicts that Collins will make many runs on this tour. With the exception of Reay, Surrey’s bowlmg was commonplace. The “Times” cricket correspondent . writes: “The decision to play Australian hhurs 'caused strong comment. The Australians have, perhaps, a too severe tour, and"' short hours are necessary, but only fifteen hours’ actual play m three days is insufficient fbr the public, who pay, and are entitled to consideration. It may Jbe possible to finish matches in. the wet season, hut, unless Mailey proves unplayable, the , dry season will mean many drawn • games with the concomitant want of i interest and disappointing everybody.” I ■ 1 ■■ SIS'
