POWDER NITRATES EXPLODE
FOUR CLERKS BADLY BURNED. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright MELBOURNE, March 16. A powder magazine, containing 2i tons of black powder nitrate, exploded at the Colonial Ammunition Company’s works at Footscray, enveloping five clerks in the flames, four receiving painful burns and severe shock. (Received March 16, 11.10 p.m.) MELBOURNE, March 16. There is no official explanation of the Footscray explosion, which totally destroyed the magazine. Tn respect to the above message, we learn from Air O. A. Whitney, of Auckland, that the Federal Government has recently acquired a seven yeads’ lease of Tho Colonial Ammunition Company’s works and equipment at Footscray, Melbourne, and that the establishment and business there are now being carried on- as Tho Federal Small Arms Ammunition Manufactory.
