DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION

DR AND ERSON’ S RETIREMENT. APPRECIATIVE REFERENCES BY MINISTER. “We probably have Dr Anderson sitting with us for the last time as Director of Education ” said the Hon. O. J. Parr (Minister for Education) at the close of the Inspectors’ Conference yesterday; “and in saying saying farewell to him in that capacity, I am sure you will all join with me in wishing the doctor many years of happy hfe in the autumn of his days. (Loud applause.) I shall miss.greatly in the days to come the sound judgments of Dr Anderson. I don’t think that Dr Anderson Ijaa been graded sufficiently high by either the educational folk or the people outside. (Laughter and applause.) I hare found in Dr Anderson as an administrator many essential and useful qualities—nob showy, certainly, but useful. (Applause.) I "have .generally found his Judgment on ticklish questions, sound and well-founded; and that, after all, is a great matter for the chief administrator of education. (Applause.) I shall miss him very much; and I hope that the new director, whoever he may be, will be a gentleman worthy to succeed Dr Anderson in the all-important office which he has occupied, I think with distinction, during the past few years.’’ (Applause). Everything, added Mr Phrr, depended upon the direotor. Ministers came and went. Sometimes they did not stay very long, nor do very much (laugjiter); but the director, like" Tennyson’s brook, went on for ever. It was, therefore, essential that the best, man available should be secured for that- position, and he hoped that the Public Service Commissioner would appoint to the office a gentleman who would be a giant in Israel so far as education was concerned. and lead us into the promised land in matters of educational reform. {Apnlause^.
