CITY TENDERS
FOB ELECTRICAL PLANT. CRITICISM OF CLOSING ARRANGEMENTS. Strong feeling was expressed by Councillor C. J. B-. Norwood, at last evening’s meeting of the City Council, against the fact that the council had accepted a recommendation that tenders for electrical plant for the city should 'close in London. He thought it was a very unwise move on the part of the council. There was a nelectrical association in England, which looked after trading operations so far as British firms were concerned, and be understood it had no overseas connections. He suggested that the tenders should close in Wellington, and that copies of the specifications should also be sent to the - High Commissioner’s office in London. The council’s officer in London could then communicate with the council as to the cheapest tenders. ’ The Mayor (Mr J. P. Luke) said that the council lid not intend to allow any gambling in the matter of tenders by nondescript people. Mr Cable Would be present as the tenders were opened in London, and could communicate with the council. Councillor P. Frazer, M.P., urged that a central buying agency should be secured. This would enable the council to save thousands of pounds in the importation of supplies.
