STATION OWNER FINED. . SHEEP LEFT IN YARD-FOR TWO WEEKS. That he had treated sheep with cruelty and had caused them unnecessary .suffering, were charges preferred against Ernest Whitehouse, of Ohariu Valley, station owner, by James Henry, inspector for the Society for the Prevention .of Cruolty to Animals (Mr H. Kennedy), at the Police Court yesterday. Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., presided. It was stated that a mbh of about: 47 sheep had been kept in a yard; which was eaten bare, and from which; there was no chance of the animals es-j caping to get food or water. Apparently they had been penned up rpr a couple of weeks. Three of the. sheep: were dead, and the remainder very; emaciated. A plea of guilty was entered, hut on behalf of the defendant it was, submitted that he was under a misapprehension in that when he placed the stock in the. yard he fully anticipated they, would bo collected toy a neighbouring: farmer.. A conviction only was entered on the first charge, hut for causing unnecessary suffering the defendant.was mulcted £3 and costs.
