UNLICEN SED ALIENS

EMPLOYED AS SEAMEN. The .War Regulations Continuance Act requires that aliens .must, as during the war, obtain licenses from the pro-, per authorities before- signing «on ships’ articles, and as this provision .was, not observed by Elephantes Anthqnasioa, a, Greek, and Charles Olsen, a Swede, they were brought before Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Captain J. .W. Grotty, bf the coastal steamer Huia, and Captain J, WiUis, of the Wakatu, on whose vessels the men were engaged, were also charged with employing the meji. For tho defence, Mr H'. F, O’Leary admitted technical breaches, but stated that the offenders had been. auite ignorant of their, obligations. The two men had signed on at -the shipping office, hut in spite of their obviously foreign names no questions were asked. Captain Crotty stated that he had aeoepted the. applicant on production of a discharge from a previous, ship. Mr 'Hunt remarked that he considered there should be some notification at the shipping office of the obligations bf aliens- He convicted the defendants and ordered them to .pay costs.
