DAY'S BAY BUSH
PRESERVATION OF THE RB. SERVE. FIRE PREVENTION MEIA.SURJSI.. . A visit, was paid yesterday ty the City Council's superintendent .of reserves, Mr J. G. MacKenzie, to the. Day's Bay* bush reserve, with the object of inspecting the progress madfl in H.nueetion 'with the fire prevention measures put in hand some, weeks ago. ■ The "reserve comprises 640 acres ot the council's '-. property, jUid 215 acres leased, from Government, ana as the entire destruction of ithe beautiful bush surrounding the bay would almost certainly occur should a fire gain a good hold, it was decided that the bush should be razed in strips of , a uniform width at certain intervals in order to localise any outbreak that might occur. - Accordingly . for some weeks past a gang of men . has been employed in clearing a space a.. chain wide all around the reserve property to prevent possibility of fire spreading from adjoining sections. Clearances have been- made alonj; (the ; Bpurs of the hills and down tie gutties. These works have been carried out by the Citv Council, which has control of the bush reserve, and the ; Erecautidnarmeasures should be /very effective it fire occurs in confining the damage, to a reasonably ; small area, ;,arid_ in preserving one of the most accessible bush scenic reserves of Wellington.
